The last thing someone going into a hospital to give birth or have surgery expects is to contract a life threatening illness or worse.
And yet as executives of hospital systems know, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that in the United States there were 722,000 healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) in acute care hospitals in 2011. About 75,000 hospital patients with HAIs died during their hospitalizations.
