North American aerosol product filling up again in 2013 CSPA industry survey reveals

WASHINGTON, DC – North American aerosol product production rose in 2013 to an all-time high, with an estimated 4.453 billion units filled, marking a 1.8 percent increase from 2012, according to the Consumer Specialty Products Association’s (CSPA) Aerosol Pressurized Products Survey.

The findings are an annual indicator of the business strength of the aerosol products industry. And this year provides further insight into an ever-changing industry as it’s the first time CSPA can report total bag-on-valve (BOV) products as a separate category of aerosol products establishing a baseline for future years.

An estimated 297 million BOV components were shipped to fillers in the U.S. and Puerto Rico in 2013. This is 8.4 percent of the total 3.54 billion valves shipped to those fillers.

CSPA has conducted this survey for 63 of its 100 years. Research on the data was conducted by the independent firm, Association Research, Inc.

“Each year, for 63 years, CSPA’s snapshot of the North American aerosol industry has aided business planning, investment, sales and R&D decisions, enabling the aerosols industry to exceed consumer preferences in a range of product categories,” said Chris Cathcart, CSPA President and CEO.

=While production estimates for North America increased, production estimates for the U.S. in particular dipped slightly for the first time in four years. An estimated 3.768 billion aerosol product units were filled by the U.S. aerosol sector in 2013, down from 3.8 billion in 2012, according to the findings.

Additional survey highlights include:

• household products fillings fell 6.1 percent after growing three straight years;

• household products fillings maintained its position as the highest production sector;

• personal care products fillings fell 2.8 percent, decreasing for the second straight year;

• animal aerosol products fillings rose 4.5 percent, increasing for the fourth consecutive year;

• food products fillings rose 3.3 percent to a historic high, increasing for nine of the past 10 years.
