Oregon hospital fined for mislabeling hazardous waste

Oregon Healthy and Science University was cited for not labeling, or labeling inappropriately, hazardous waste containers in its storage facilities

Oregon Healthy and Science University (OHSU) was recently fined by the Department of Environmental Quality for not labeling, or labeling inappropriately, hazardous waste containers in its storage facilities, according to an article on the Oregon Live website.

The issues — including some other minor violations – did not pose a risk to hospital staff.

The bulk of the fine resulted from OHSU failing to label and treat propane or hydrogen sulfide pressurized-gas containers as hazardous waste.

The hospital was also fined $1,650 for not labeling 55-gallon drums, aerosol cans and cylinders with start dates for waste collection. The material must be date-labeled because it can't be stored as waste longer than 90 days.
