Patrols increased after 'fluke' shooting in hospital parking lot

Massachusetts' Baystate Medical Center security chief says hospital is safe, incidents of violence rare

The recent shooting in the parking lot outside the Baystate Medical Center Emergency Department was a rarity, according to the hospital’s director of security, but patrols were increased after the incident.

One man was shot in the leg during a dispute in the parking lot outside the Emergency Department of the Springfield, Mas., hospital, according to an article on the Mass Live website.

The hospital shooting occurred while several police cars were already stationed outside as a precaution against violence, the director of security, Thomas Lynch, said. When friends of victims come to the hospital immediately after shootings elsewhere, emotions are raw and things can get out of hand, so extra patrols are often dispatched, according to the article.

In the article, Lynch said following an incident of violence, his staff discusses what happened and what security needs to do in the future if it happens again.
