Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital automates code blues with Amcom Software

MINNEAPOLIS—Amcom Software, Inc. today announced Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital is using Amcom Messenger™ to save time and improve patient safety in its new, 72-bed building. The Hershey, Pa., organization selected Amcom to improve code blue notifications by automating the process and reducing notification time.

“When we were building this hospital we asked ourselves, ‘How can we improve the code blue process?’” said Kelly Dale, Sr. Systems Analyst - Voice Systems at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. “After looking at other systems, we decided to contact Amcom, our call center solutions provider. Amcom’s proposed solution could do just what we envisioned, and it was up and running very quickly.”

Amcom Messenger routes code blue alerts from the Rauland Responder® 5 staff terminals in each patient room directly to the code team’s USA Mobility pagers and Ascom™ phones. “People used to call our operators on the emergency line and announce the code and location. Then the operator would hit a few keys on their console to send the pages,” said Dale. “Now, staff just hit a button on the wall and the rest is automated. And with the Amcom/Responder 5 integration, the message is consistent every time.”

“Efficiency is so important in critical situations like a code blue,” said Colin Balmforth, President, Amcom Software. “One of our goals is to make a positive impact during these circumstances by helping to ensure the right message gets to the right people at the right time. It is wonderful to hear that our solutions are helping the staff at the Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital succeed in this effort.”
