Privacy curtains and sheets can harbor pathogens

Soft surfaces can fly under the radar in the spread of infectious agents


Soft surfaces often don't get the attention they deserve when dealing with the transmission of infectious agents, according to an article on the Infection Control Today website.

More studies are beginning to look at contaminated textiles (including privacy curtains, upholstery, apparel, etc.) as a vehicle for cross-contamination and transmission of multidrug-resistant organisms.

Studies indicate that microorganisms shed by patients can contaminate hospital surfaces at concentrations sufficient for transmission, the article said.

These pathogens can survive for extended periods despite attempts at disinfection and can be transferred to the hands of healthcare personnel.
