The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center mold crisis could be more widespread than initially believed, according to an article on the Trib Live website. A new investigation is exploring the possible mold deaths of two more UPMC patients.
A law firm is gathering details in connection the death of a June 2014 kidney transplant patient in UPMC Montefiore who contracted a fungal lung infection and eventually died in UPMC Presbyterian. The probe is also investigating the death of a man who underwent a lung transplant in November.
Both hospitals were part of a mold investigation last month that caused UPMC to halt its transplant program for nearly a week.
Although transplants resumed at UPMC after six days, the cardiothoracic ICU at Presby remains closed.
