A recent report has found that more than 1 in 5 nursing homes report a severe shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) and some staff shortages, according to an article on the Health Affair website.
Report includes results from a new national database containing 98 percent of U.S. nursing homes.
The federal government promised to provide two weeks’ supply of PPE to nursing homes in May. However, many nursing homes say they never got adequate PPE. Rates of both did not significantly improve from May to July.
By the end of July 2020, more than 60,000 deaths had occurred in US nursing homes and other long-term care facilities, accounting for nearly half of all COVID-related fatalities nationwide.
Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that nursing homes must “provide supplies necessary to adhere to recommended infection prevention and control practices.”
