Rhode Island is converting a former Lowe’s store into a coronavirus hospital

As many as 624 beds will be set up in the 140,000-square-foot building


A cavernous former Lowe’s store in the in North Kingston, R.I., is among three locations where emergency managers are making preparations for hospital-level medical care to help the state’s hospitals handle an overflow of patients with the novel coronavirus, according to an article on the Providence Journal website.

As many as 624 beds  will be set up in the 140,000-square-foot building.

The former home improvement store, a former Citizens Bank headquarters in Cranston and the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence — are expected to provide “surge capacity” for the hospital system.

If necessary, the three facilities could provide more than 1,500 additional hospital beds.
