SC hospital shootings highlight violence in healthcare facilities

Advocates say the culture tells employees danger is 'just part of a job'

Recent back-to-back shootings at South Carolina hospitals have put the spotlight on the dangers healthcare employees face every day, according to an article on The State website.

Worse, advocates say, the culture tells employees danger is “just part of a job.”

“It happens every day and it’s not reported, because healthcare workers have been taught their entire lives to do no harm,” Schipp Ames, vice president of communications, education and member services for the S.C. Hospital Association said.

“There is workplace violence and abuse that regularly goes unreported,” he said. “It just so happens it was a gun this time as a weapon. But in the past it was a towel bar that was taken off a wall in a room and used to beat an employee.”
