Sierra Leone rebuilds healthcare system with eco-friendly medical waste disposal

Freetown's Goderich Emergency Surgical and Paediatric Hospital gets autoclave


Rebuilding after the Ebola outbreak, Goderich Emergency Surgical and Paediatric Hospital just outside Freetown, Sierra Leone, installed of an autoclave for eco-friendly medical waste disposal, according to an article on the All Africa website.

The waste decontamination facility is the first step in rebuilding the health sector, the article said.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) coordinated the installation of the autoclaves and trained staff to safely run the sterilization machine. 

A total of 10 autoclave machines will be installed across the country.

In addition to the autoclave installation, UNDP will assist hospitals with infection controls through waste management protocols and where necessary, assist the facilities to develop and implement infection prevention and control systems.
