Snow brings chaos, loss to Buffalo nursing home

Huge snow fall in Buffalo, N.Y., led to facility issues, evacuation of residents and one death

A recent huge snow fall in Buffalo, N.Y., led to facility issues, the evacuation of residents and one death, according to an article on The New York Times website.

A gas leak at a nearby collapsed warehouse caused the facility to move residents from an affected wing into the dining room and back.

The next day, some sagging was noticed in the ceiling of the facility. Fearing that the roof might collapse, the nursing home evacuated residents to a nearby business park.

Once there, they were arranged around four fountains and a plaza of artificial plants, and the deli served soup and sandwiches, according to nursing home officials. By 11:30 p.m., they had been dispersed to other nursing homes and a hospital, according to the article.

One resident died of natural causes during the transfer to another nursing home.

It was eventually determined that the sagging part of the ceiling that had led to the evacuation was a false alarm, the article said. It was meant to give under pressure.
