Software simulations help build model hospital

Software simulations help keep projects the right size and ensure that staffing, scheduling and patient volume are considered for efficient operations.

How do software simulations help build model hospital? In an article for Medical Construction & Design magazine, Kristyna Culp, managing principal and director of operations of healthcare consulting and design firm FreemanWhite, says modeling helps keep the project the right size and also ensures that staffing, scheduling and patient volume are considered for efficient operations.

When hospitals work to improve the patient experience, reduce waiting times and efficiently move patients through the system, computer simulation models help project designers and administrators to view a variety of possible scenarios before making crucial decisions.

Culp points out that as expensive as construction is, operating costs make up 80–90 percent of the total lifecycle cost of a building. Simulation modeling can help avoid costly overbuilding and underbuilding and make sure architecture is designed around efficient operations that are focused on the patient and family needs and include staff input.
