Ken Wright, Chairman of the Southampton Hospital Association (SHA), announced that the internationally renowned architectural firms, Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects, have been selected as the design team for the new Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
Rafael Viñoly Architects is respected world-wide and blends a human-centered approach to care with a focus on integrating technological advancements into every aspect of medical care delivery. Recent examples of their award-winning work include the Penn Medicine Complex in Philadelphia, the New Stanford Hospital at the Stanford University Medical Center in California, and the University of Chicago Medicine Center, Center for Care and Discovery. HKS Architects is recognized for healthcare design that improves health and well-being through compelling, efficient and flexible solutions, including the patient-sensitive Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio, the dynamic Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, and the nurturing Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth, Texas.
“Both Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects are global firms who together bring us brilliant architectural talent and deep and broad healthcare expertise,” said Mr. Wright. “They have built community hospitals and academic medical centers and are keenly adept at solving cultural, technological and environmental concerns, as well as those of function, with unique and unprecedented solutions and inspired designs. We are excited to have this vibrant team onboard to help us reshape the healthcare landscape on the East End.”
“We are dedicated to building an environment that is patient-centric and enhances health and well-being,” said Robert S. Chaloner, Chief Administrative Officer of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “Together Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects will help us realize our vision of transforming the delivery of healthcare on the East End to benefit our community for generations to come.”
“Through our partnership with the Southampton Hospital Association, Stony Brook Medicine continues to bring new life-changing technology and services to the East End community,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences and Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. “The new facility will provide another opportunity in which academic medicine can help build on the leading healthcare programs offered by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.”
The two firms will work as a seamless integrated team throughout all phases of design, documentation and construction. They have identified BR+A as consulting engineers. The firm is known for designing responsive, high-performing buildings where people and ideas thrive to provide the highest level of patient care, construction fabrication, resiliency and sustainability.
The architect search attracted many of the world’s most visible and reputable firms. The decision by the SHA Board to appoint the team of Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects centered on strict criteria, including their impressive experiences in the healthcare sector; a steadfast commitment to a collaborative process; the ability to bridge the elegance of iconic design with sustainability; and importantly, experience with, and respect for, the topography and legacy of the East End. The budget for the design project is $305mm. It is targeted to be completed and operational by 2025.
The plan for the new hospital is the result of research by Erdman, a national strategic planning firm specializing in healthcare which studied service offerings, population health, patient experience, new care models, and the existing facility. Fifteen acres on the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University have been designated as the site of the new state-of-the-art facility that will replace the existing Meeting House Lane hospital location, which dates back to 1924.
