Scientists have found overuse of the drugs was the main cause of a serious stomach bug outbreak that spread through NHS hospitals.

 

Limiting antibiotics rather than a deep cleaning program eventually brought the epidemic under control, the research found.

 

Cutting back on ciprofloxacin and related antibiotics led to an 80% fall in drug-resistant C. diff infections in the UK.
