Patients at Health Sciences North in Sudbury, Ontario, soon will need to light up somewhere beyond the facility's grounds.

The Ramsey Lake Health Centre and Sudbury Outpatient Centre will be going 100% smoke-free as of April 1, according to an article on the Sudbury Star website.

“One of the aspects of the new smoke-free property policy for our patients who smoke is that it helps break up those routines and triggers that make it easy for them to smoke, such as just walking outside a short distance from the door," said Dr. Amanda Hey, regional primary care lead with the Northeast Cancer Centre.

Employees, medical and credentialed professional staff, volunteers, students and contract workers have been banned from smoking on hospital property since 2010.

Over 50% of all Ontario hospitals have gone entirely smoke-free.
