Summa Health taps Ohio Cat, Caterpillar for Standby Power Solutions

Caterpillar Inc. today announced that Summa Health, one of the largest healthcare provider systems in Ohio, has selected Ohio Cat to supply standby power solutions from Caterpillar that will support expanded operations across its network, including the new 343,000-square-foot, seven-story Patient Tower Addition under construction at its Akron Campus.

Summa Health recently purchased five Cat® diesel generator sets for emergency services, surgeries, life support, and other acute patient care activities; data center backup; and other essential operations.  The order includes 1250 kW Cat® C32 diesel generator sets with superior power density that significantly decreases installed and ancillary costs through reduced overall footprints and weight.

When the new generator sets are commissioned, Summa Health will have deployed a total of 18 Cat generator sets at its hospitals, free-standing emergency departments, and other locations throughout northeast Ohio.

“Summa Health serves more than one million patients every year across our network, and we are committed to providing superior care for every one of them,” said Ed Friedl, vice president of construction and property management for Summa Health. “Reliable power plays an essential role in the care of our patients, which is why Summa has turned to Ohio Cat and Caterpillar many times to provide durable, reliable power solutions as well as ongoing service and support for performance when Summa needs it most.”

Caterpillar’s medium- to large-sized diesel generator sets from 1400 to 3500 kVA in 50-Hz applications and 1100 to 2750 ekW for 60-Hz operating environments have been upgraded to deliver higher power density.

The Cat C32 diesel generator set is equipped with an alternator that enables quick load acceptance and features exceptional motor starting capabilities, which allows users to minimize oversizing the generator set due to motor starting requirements.

It has been designed and tested to meet the NFPA power restoration requirement for Level 1 systems and accept 100 percent block load in one step. It also meets ISO 8528-5 G3 requirements for steady state and load acceptance.

“Leading healthcare facilities rely on Caterpillar and the Cat dealer network for power solutions that perform as reliably and tirelessly as their caregivers,” said Joel Feucht, general manager for Caterpillar’s Large Electric Power business. “For nearly 30 years, Caterpillar and Ohio Cat have backed Summa Health’s award-winning care with standby power, and we look forward to helping provide the highest quality, compassionate care and contribute to a healthier community.”

Caterpillar delivers innovative power systems engineered to deliver exceptional durability, reliability and value. The company offers worldwide product support, with parts and service available globally through the Cat authorized service and dealer network. In addition, dealer service technicians are trained to service every aspect of Cat equipment.
