Tarkett, a provider of sustainable flooring and sports surface solutions, announced today the implementation of their Material Health Statement. In response to the market demand for transparency and aligned with Tarkett’s mission to optimize products that allow consumers to work and live in spaces that promote health and well-being, Tarkett created a Material Health Statement (MHS). The MHS is a verified product ingredient disclosure and material assessment declaration.
Tarkett’s MHS uses the chemical ingredient evaluation results obtained through the Cradle to Cradle® material assessments performed on Tarkett products by the Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA). Evaluation of all Tarkett products using this methodology is one of the company’s 2020 goals. To date, over 2,500 chemicals used at Tarkett have been assessed by EPEA.
One of the only manufacturers in the industry to choose to show the results of their Cradle to Cradle material assessments, Tarkett’s goal is for their MHS to set a new industry standard. The MHS provides radical transparency, full ingredient disclosure to 100 ppm (parts per million, 0.01%) and provides relevant health and environmental information for consumers on Tarkett products. This level of transparency sets their MHS apart from any other health assessment currently in use, such as traditional HPDs or EPDs. The MHS is inclusive of both hazard and risk, allowing end-users to easily understand the risk attached to each material.
“We wanted to expand on existing disclosure statements,” Diane Martel, Vice President of Environmental Planning and Strategy for Tarkett North America explains. “It is our goal to further enlighten our customers to make more informed product purchase decisions while creating spaces that promote health and wellness and protect our planet for the future.”
Aligned with one of the strictest protocols available in the market, the assessment presents the results of a third party, science based hazard and full risk assessment of ingredients by considering the potential impacts through all product steps including: extraction, production, use and recycling.
