ATLANTA – Lighting, heating, cooling, and ventilation account for nearly 60 percent of U.S. commercial buildings’ energy usage – and will still account for nearly half of their energy usage in 2015, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
In response, Irisys – a global leader in thermal imaging and people counting solutions – has expanded its strategic focus to support the growing Smart Buildings movement, which, in part, utilizes data, technology and automated functions to optimize utilization, support green standards and control operating costs.
Thermal people counting technology unobtrusively detects building users by their body heat and continuously gathers analytics that make buildings smarter when integrated into key automated systems – like those for lighting and HVAC. The Irisys people counting solution, for example, gleans intelligence at various levels – from the total building to individual floors and meeting rooms. And because it utilizes thermal technology, counters accurately identify people even in low- and no-light conditions.
The result is an ability to create a unique insight that illustrates how occupants utilize buildings over time and uncovers areas to improve utilization; help systems and the environment constantly evolve to fluctuating occupancies; reduce energy usage; lower operating costs; and cut carbon footprints to adhere to greener standards.
Irisys technology is able to integrate with other commercial providers’ Smart Building solutions, such as those within Facilities Management, Estate Management and Building Management Systems.
Jeff Riordan, a former director of sales at Emerson Climate Technologies and director of national accounts for Johnson Controls, has been appointed Irisys’ new business development director and is charged with leading its expansion in the United States.
“The Smart Building movement is still in its relatively early phases, but we see it continuously advancing – particularly by commercial solutions providers that are integrating new technologies and developing approaches that define the next generation of intelligent facilities,” Riordan says. “We are excited about the opportunity to continue introducing thermal people counting technology to this market.”
