UL Approvals Announced for Colt Fire & Smoke Curtains

The BILCO Company, a subsidiary of AmesburyTruth™, now offers Colt Fire Protective and Smoke Curtains that are listed to both UL 10D and UL 1784. Products are available with each rating and dual-rated products can also be specified.

Colt Type FA fire protective curtains feature a UL 10D listing, are used to create a temporary fire barrier between two areas and offer a more aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional solutions. UL 10D covers the evaluation of fire protective curtain assemblies intended to provide supplemental, passive fire protection as part of an engineered fire protection system. The standard allows fire protective curtains to be used for nonstructural separation and are not intended to be substituted for structural hourly rated partitions or opening protectives that have been tested for fire endurance and hose stream performance.

Colt Type SD automatic smoke curtains feature a UL 1784 listing and are designed to contain smoke in the event of a fire, preventing its movement through a building and protecting egress pathways. The UL 1784 test standard is used to determine the rate of air leakage through door assemblies and other opening protectives installed in wall opening where air leakage is intended to be controlled. Smoke curtains are ideally suited for elevator hoist ways, atrium separations and other openings that can lead to rapid smoke migration. The Colt Type FAS is designed to meet both UL 10D and UL 1784 test standards where both smoke and fire protection are required.

Colt smoke and fire protective curtains offer a hidden layer of protection to maximize building design possibilities. All products feature a specially designed cloth material and a low-voltage motor that holds the curtain in the up position until needed. In the event of a fire and upon receiving a signal from the fire or smoke detection system, the electrically actuated curtain lowers to seal off an opening. Battery back-ups and control panels can be supplied with the curtains and a simple switch raises the curtain back fully to the ready position.

Since 2014, BILCO has been the exclusive distributor for Colt’s commercial building products throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. In addition to the fire and smoke curtains, Colt manufactures a line of natural ventilation and passive smoke control products. The Coltlite, a natural louvered ventilator, and the Firelight, a glazed skylight ventilator, are two of Colt’s many products that provide highly energy-efficient solutions for environmentally friendly building designs.
