The healing garden perched on the seventh floor setback of a 14-story Smilow Cancer Hospital in New Haven, Conn., is the defining feature of the facility’s design, according to an article on the Healthcare Design website. A combination of plants was used to make the garden green year-round. Because of the garden’s rooftop location, drought- and wind-resistant plants were included. The focal point of the garden is a water feature and reflecting pool.
As CMS deadlines approach and renovation projects accelerate, healthcare facility managers must understand how NFPA 101, state fire codes and sprinkler design strategies intersect.
Research and education are intentionally embedded in the hospital’s design, with dedicated spaces for scientific collaboration, clinical investigation and training.
The completed tenant improvement includes approximately 100,000 square feet of improved space across two buildings and represents an investment of $65 million.
