WAC Lighting brightens up children's lives at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island

By Healthcare Facilities Today

Stony Brook, New York – When families visit the Ronald McDonald Family Room in the pediatric unit of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, they will view stunning luminaires from WAC Lighting. The Ronald McDonald Room is an extension of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (a home-away-from-home for families of seriously ill children) in the pediatric unit of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room provides families of children undergoing medical treatment a place to rest and relax at the hospital where they can spend quiet time together, engage in private conversation, enjoy beverages and snacks, and even freshen up with a shower.  The room is fully equipped with a stocked kitchenette and dining area, a comfortable sitting area, and a large flat screen television.  In addition, the room offers laptops with internet access, a private shower, laundry facilities transportation program that brings families to airports, doctor appointments and drug stores.

Inside the Family Room, visitors will see a variety of WAC’s high-quality luminaires. Carved fabric-like “Linen” wall sconces, highlighted by a unique texture of striking molded porcelain, adorn the walls. The ADA compliant luminaires are enhanced by contemporary Chrome finished backplates and hardware which complement the room décor. Energy-efficient LEDme® miniature recessed downlights, designed with an ultra low square profile and die cast aluminum trim, provide comfortable general and task lighting throughout the room. Modern minimalist form derived from function, WAC’s Bullet pendants feature a chrome hardware finish and complemented with a white interior that reflects robust light on the kitchen island surface.

Stony Brook Children’s Hospital partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMH-LI) to develop the Family Room Program, a family-friendly respite area located on the 11th floor of the hospital. As Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital, Stony Brook Children’s serves a population of 1.5 million. The room provides support for families of more than 7,000 children who are hospitalized each year at Stony Brook Children’s, helping to alleviate the anxiety of having a child in the hospital by keeping them close to their child’s bedside.

“The Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s is an exciting and much-needed expansion of our services into Suffolk County,” said Matthew Campo, Executive Director of RMH-LI. “It enables the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island to serve thousands of families, offering comfort and convenience for parents who have to travel back and forth to the hospital to be with their child.”
