Washington hospitals hit will data security breach

A former employee stole 35 computers and 34 scanners

A healthcare security breach at three Washington hospitals led to the theft of 35 computers and 34 scanners, according to an article of the Health IT Security website.

A former IT contractor for Franciscan Health Systems kept his active security pass months after he had completed his work for the company, the article said.

The former employee accessed one hospital six times, an administrative office 24 times, and an education and support facility eight times.

Without administrative and technical safeguards, unauthorized individuals can gain access to sensitive information as well as equipment, the article said.
