When reality hits the perfect hybrid OR project

Proactive strategies are needed to keep the project on track and produce a successful outcome

By Healthcare Facilities Today

Whether a hybrid OR project is a renovation or part of a larger replacement or addition project, facilities doing a hybrid for the first time are in for a challenging new experience, according to an article on the Medical Construction & Design website.

Project stakeholders can change, technology and business plans change and timely decisions are difficult to achieve. Because construction can’t stop, proactive strategies are needed to keep the project on track.

Early programming efforts are key to a hybrid OR project. Each room incorporates specific design elements to support a unique combination of procedures and practitioners. the article said.

Understanding the facility’s requirements is the first step in understanding the vision for the room, according to the article. The project team must identify and assemble the key players, including physician stakeholders, nursing staff, imaging staff and other clinical team members.

Early steps should include identifying the procedures that will be performed in the near and distance future. It is vital to identify procedures which will lead to the need for more invasive surgical procedures, subsequently requiring additional support equipment, the article said.
