Wiremold lab bench box meets UL spill standard

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Legrand has introduced a pedestal-style outlet box that is designed specifically for laboratory benches. Wiremold Lab Bench Pedestal Table Boxesprovide increased capacity and access to multiple services in a variety of configurations to meet the demanding needs of laboratory activity. When installed with certain Pass & Seymour receptacles, these boxes meet UL 111, the proposed standard for multi-outlet assemblies, which includes a spill test.

Lab bench pedestal table boxes are field-wired units that can be added to existing benches or designed into new lab construction. The box can be divided into two gangs that have the capacity to wire a 15A, 20A, GFCI, or a 30A twist lock receptacle. A removable divider enables the box to contain multiple services like data/communications and audio/video. Field configurability allows installers to attach conduits directly to the box using ¾" knock outs, or the ¾" conduit stubs included with the box.

UL has evaluated the box for use on laboratory bench work surfaces. Pass & Seymour receptacles were installed in the box and subjected to spill testing outlined in UL 111. A container with eight grams of salt in one  liter of water was placed on a 45-degree angle surface facing the box and the container was tipped over. The test results showed that there was no risk of fire or electrical shock as a result of the spill. In addition to the proposed UL 111 standard, the Lab Bench Box meets the Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL) listing for work surfaces, as well as UL 514A for metallic outlet boxes.
