The four-stage crisis framework includes:
1. Anxiety - where somebody is showing they are agitated.
2. Defensiveness - where someone is likely to verbally challenge staff.
3. Risk behavior - where someone might try to intimidate a staff member.
4. Tension reduction - after someone goes through a crisis episode, there tends to be a release of energy.
The program also includes guidance for breaking negative news to patients and family members.
